Back inside her room, Velte reached out with her mind. Master? I met with the Hawks. Can you see them now?

The voice roared back inside her head. No, I cannot see them. Are you certain you found the right people?

Her throat tightened. Had she been mistaken? But no, it was them. I spoke with only one man, but around the room, seven others kept close watch.

The volume in her mind increased and she pressed a hand to her forehead. I cannot sense anything blocking me, Martokallu shrieked. Their mage must be cloaking their presence again.

Clinging to control, Velte answered, I have set the bait. They will die tonight. We will destroy them, Master.

See that you do, he grated before both the voice and the pain vanished.

Realizing she could not depend upon Martokallu’s vision, Velte raced to the window, hoping she was not too late. There they were, moseying through the square. She waited to see which exit they took and then turned to the mirror.

The purple-eyed beauty was gone, replaced by a middle-aged housemaid who kept her purple eyes demurely lowered.

It would do.

She hurried from the room. Without Martokallu to guide her, she would have to find out for herself where the Hawks were staying.
